'FREAK POWER' Day To Be Celebrated October 17 in Aspen, Colorado

Event celebrates release of Hunter S. Thompson political campaign doc 'FREAK POWER: The Ballot or the Bomb,' premiering on streaming platforms Oct. 23


ASPEN, Colorado -- Gaia Entertainment, MakeMake Entertainment and Sheriff Campaign Films announced today that Saturday, October 17, 2020 will be declared Freak Power Day in Aspen, Colorado. The day’s events celebrate the release of Hunter S. Thompson political documentary, FREAK POWER: The Ballot or the Bomb, detailing Thompson’s irreverent, imaginative, yet deadly serious 1970 campaign for sheriff of Pitkin County, surrounding Aspen, Colorado. The film releases on streaming platforms starting October 23. 


In honor of the 50 year anniversary of Hunter S. Thompson’s insightful and provocative campaign for sheriff, Mayor Torre will declare this October 17, 2020, FREAK POWER Day in the City of Aspen and will rename the city Fat City for the day. All are encouraged to dress in 60’s and 70’s attire.

WHAT: Declaration of Freak Power Day & Renaming Aspen ‘Fat City’

WHEN: Saturday, October 17, 2020

Beginning at 12:00 p.m. and continuing throughout the day

WHERE: Pitkin County Courthouse 506 East Main Street Aspen, Colorado 81611

VISUALS: The event kicks off with remarks from Mayor Torre and

continues throughout the day with visual elements including:

  • Sodding of a street in front of Gonzo Gallery (601 E. Hyman Ave., Aspen) in honor of a key plank of Thompson’s platform.

  • Voter Registration Station. Thompson knew that getting people involved in politics is the only way to make progress. A voter registration area will be set up on the newly sodded street and Coloradans will be able to fill out forms and register to vote for the November general election. Newly registered voters will be escorted by the Freak Power Entourage to deliver their registration forms at the Courthouse.

  • Freak Power Bike Posse will ride through the city’s streets, dressed in costume.

  • Hippies in the streets! Celebrants are encouraged to dress in 60’s and 70’s attire - if you can’t celebrate in the streets, wear a costume to work!
